The Political Life of James Mo essays James Monroe was formally elected to his uncles seat in the Virginia House of Delegates. Within a short time, Monroes legislative colleagues arranged for him to sit on the Governors Council, a position with little power but immense prestige for a newcomer. As a member of the council, one of the areas Monroe took a deep interest in was the development of the West. After a year, Monroes performance as a councilor was solid enough to land him an even more important position delegate to the Continental Congress. By 1783, Monroe had already emerged as a significant patriot-leader. It was a role he would assume for the remainder of his life. Monroe left Virginia to serve in Congress, the center of activity trying to work out the new national government. One issue Monroe jumped on was the plan of government for the west. He designed the trip to understand and plan for that regions future. From his journey, Monroe played an important part in shaping the congressional policy in the westward region.During his time in Congress, Monroe showed a growing interest in the expansion of the U.S. commerce. In one session, he tried to convince Congress of the need to amend the Articles of Confederation, which would allow Congress to regulate and control trade. Monroe ended his congressional term, and even though he had been the first to consider revising the Constitution, he was not selected as a Virginia delegate and later opposed the ratification of the new Constitution. In 1786, after he ended his congressional term, Monroe returned to Virginia to take up practicing law. Judge Jones discouraged him from starting his law in career in Richmond, Virginia, and Jones suggested that he go to a smaller town for greater opportunities and political advancements. But what exactly do we mean by active and passive anyway? The active voice puts the doer of the action described (in grammar terms, the agent) first. This tends to sound natural and clear, and it leaves no information hidden. For example: The cat had stolen the dogs dinner. Here the doer (the cat) is stated before the action (had stolen). Now look at this sentence: The dogs dinner had been stolen by the cat. This is the passive voice: the action comes before the doer. In fact, the sentence would still make sense if you removed by the cat, which would leave everyone wondering who had stolen the poor dogs food. The passive voice can be used cynically to disguise who performed an action, which can produce a somewhat opaque and suspect piece of writing. And be careful not to use it habitually – doing so weighs down writing and makes it sound a bit bureaucratic and dull.

They were wrong. The cause for autism is still a mystery, however, the facts remain that autism in children is on the rise. For many people, the history of their most favorite food takes source from their childhood. I am not an exception, and when I think about the most delicious and memorable food, I always remember amazing chocolate cakes with juicy cherries that my grandmother used to cook for me when I was a child. She lived in a small town in Kansas, and together with my mom and sister, we used to visit her several times a year for holidays. And every time our grandma was treating us with those amazing cakes! There is no child who does not like chocolate cakes. I guess, my grandma knew this so well, that is why she was glad to spend a full day in the kitchen cooking those cakes in order to make us happy. It is hard to find the words to express the feelings I was experiencing when I used to receive a plate with those divine brown cakes topped with huge juicy cherries and wrapped in dark-brown chocolate cream. I used to think that I could eat not less than a dozen of them at once! They were so sweet, delicious and amazingly delicate! I am not sure about the way she used to cook them, but I can say that the secret of the cakes was a special chocolate pastry cream. It was enough dense not to flow down from the cakes and tightly wrap the cherries on the top of every cake. But at the same time, this delicious chocolate souse was as soft and creamy as pure hot chocolate, and it was an extreme pleasure to feel its taste in my mouth and on my lips. Many years have passed, but every time I eat chocolate cakes with berries, sweet and blissful memories and feelings from my childhood come back to me. I feel myself like a little child again, waiting for miraculous doors to open and breathtaking smell of my grandma’s cakes make my head go round. Since those times, the taste of chocolate cream remains the sweetest and the most pleasant for me, no matter what kind of desert it is used for. Absurdity in The Stranger essays The Stranger contains a strong notion of absurdity; the useless attempt humanity makes to find rational order where none exists. Philip H. Rhein believes that Camus asserts that individual lives and human existence in general have no rational meaning or order. Though Camus does not openly refer to the notion of absurdity in The Stranger, events that occur in the novel are perfect examples that life is absurd: the story of the Czechoslovakian man, Salamano, and the trial of Meursault. While in jail, Meursault thinks about the story of a young Czechoslovakian man who left his village, made a fortune, and returned to his village in disguise to see his mother and sister. He planned to reveal his identity after showing off his wealth. Unfortunately, his mother and sister killed and robbed him before he could reveal himself. Rhein believes that the absurdity of life is emphasized by the story of the Czech...although Meursault finds the story unbelievable from his point of view. There is no reason for the son to have died. His ironic fate does not comply with any logical or ordered system governing human existence; his death is a meaningless tragedy that defies rationalization or justification. Salamano, Meursaults neighbor, has a dog that he beats and swears at. One evening his dog runs away and Raymond and Meursault find Salamano searching for it. That night, Meursault hears Salamano crying in his room. Later, Salamano talks with Meursault and states that he is sure that Meursault loved his mother, despite the fact that Meursault offers no evidence to support this. Some view this as Salamano himself supplying the rational order that he desires to find in the world. Cows are cruelly branded with a hot iron and crammed into feed lots. The fate of these animals is abhorrent to anybody with a conscience. These animals can feel pain and fear, and to put them into these conditions is beyond barbaric and cruel. Beyond this, factory farms are also bad for the environment. The animal excrement causes pollution that runs off into the water. Taking the animals off the farm and onto the feed lot deprives the farming soil of fertilizer, which means that artificial fertilizer must be used, and this means using fossil fuel. Moreover, land must be clear cut to raise food for these animals. In short, factory farms and the proliferation of animals on these farms is a very inefficient use of resources. Regular methods of farming, in which animals are free to roam the land, and graze on grass, and have a natural life, must be brought back. This would not only be good for the environment, but it would result in much less cruelty to animals. Even though factory farms produce a large quantity of food, and the food is ostensibly necessary to feed a growing planet, farmers should make innovations that make their operations less cruel to animals and more kind to the environment. A. Cruelty to Animals Animal rights activists and animal lovers everywhere are clear that animals should not be subjected to needless suffering. The evidence regarding factory farms indicates that animals suffer needlessly, so these factory farms are violating ever ything that animal lovers and animal rights activists stand for.
